Data and permissions
Hovering and selecting alone send nothing. In note mode, clicking the symbol beside text starts a request. The website uses a separate panel action to send. Dictionary lookup sends only the chosen word to Wiktionary.
Version 0.5.4 · beta. This page describes extension data handling. Introductory analyses depend on service availability.
Online dictionary requests
The selected query goes directly to en.wiktionary.org/w/api.php or ru.wiktionary.org/w/api.php. The whole passage, page address, beforeword ID and model key are not included. Requests omit credentials and referrer; Wikimedia still receives the query and ordinary network information, including the connection address.
Definitions, lookup results and the current path use page memory, with no permanent dictionary history added by beforeword. Destroying or reloading the panel clears that memory; hiding the panel may keep it alive. The browser and Wikimedia can handle network data under their own policies.
Definition text is extracted from a linked Wiktionary revision and credited to its contributors under CC BY-SA 4.0. Examples, references and formatting are removed; HTML spacing is simplified without paraphrasing. The source entry remains available for its full layout and notices.

In your browser
The latest captured fragment and its site origin, without path or query, use temporary extension storage until replaced, cleared or the session ends. On platforms without suitable session storage, temporary data remains only in memory and may be lost when its context closes.
A temporary beforeword token is created only for an explicit AI analysis and expires on the server after 24 hours. A separate random installation identifier persists between sessions to count the 8 analyses.
Language, enabled sites and own-model settings without the key also persist locally. Current records and reports stay in panel memory. Hiding or closing the panel does not guarantee erasure.
A personal key, including one created through OpenRouter sign-in, uses temporary extension storage or memory only. It is not saved in permanent preferences, shared with page scripts or sent to beforeword’s server.
When text is sent
In note mode, choosing the symbol beside a passage or the analysis button sends the selected text. Hovering, switching sections and opening prepared examples do not request a model. A dictionary query sends the chosen word after its separate action.
Optional introductory AI mode uses api.beforeword.xyz. Session creation sends the installation identifier without selected text. The record and language follow; the server adds the beforeword instruction and sends the text to OpenAI.
The source page’s address is not added to the request. A URL inside the record remains part of it. Tokens and installation identifiers are not forwarded to OpenAI.
Your own model
In this optional mode, the record, language, beforeword instruction and personal key go directly to the selected service. OpenRouter routes requests to its model providers. Loading a model list is a separate action and sends no selected passage. Processing, retention and billing follow the provider’s terms.
Connect an account
Chrome supports connection through OpenRouter’s authorization page. After you approve, the extension receives an API key for your account. It does not read chat cookies. Safari and the other listed providers use API keys in this beta.
beforeword’s AI server
The beforeword AI application does not save or log source texts or reports. It stores hashes of installation identifiers and session tokens, a network identifier derived with a server secret, the extension origin, expiries, counters and temporary reservations. Dictionary queries go directly to Wikimedia instead.
An installation’s completed-report count has no daily reset or automatic expiry. Temporary expired records are removed during later database operations. This does not guarantee erasure from backups or hosting systems. Providers and hosting infrastructure have their own data practices.
There is no analytics, browser fingerprinting, advertising, external font loading or remote executable code.
Permissions
Site and personal-model access are optional and requested for chosen origins. Chrome requests the sign-in permission when you connect OpenRouter. Sign-in starts only after your action. Turning off the button does not revoke browser access already granted; manage it in your browser’s extension settings.
Reset
Reset clears the record and report, captured fragment and local beforeword token. It preserves the installation ID, allowance and own-model settings/key. Use the separate forget-key action to remove a personal key. A key created through OpenRouter sign-in can also be revoked in the provider account. Copied files and requests already sent are separate.
Package preview
Manual input and labelled authored AI examples stay in page memory. Opening them does not call a model. Dictionary lookup makes the same explicit requests to Wiktionary described above; it is not an offline dictionary.

External source, license and beforeword.xyz links open only when chosen. Wikimedia, your browser, model providers and hosting infrastructure have their own data practices.
