BEFOREWORD · FOR AI

Start with the writing.

Add beforeword to your AI chat. The instructions ask it to preserve the supplied text, separate what a reading adds, and apply the same examination to its own response.

beforeword, its rules, and this page are included. No written verbal form is exempt.

THREE STEPS

Copy. Paste. Ask.

  1. Copy the instructions

Choose one edition: full instructions for a chat, or the shorter edition for a field limited to 5,000 characters.

  2. Open your AI chat

Choose the app you use. Each link opens it in a new tab.

  3. Paste into a new conversation

Send the instructions as the first message. Send your question or the text to examine in the next message.

The instructions are supplied to this conversation while they remain available in its context. Paste them again in a new conversation, or use the app settings below. Model agreement or a “mode activated” message does not replace examining its response.

CONSTRUCTED EXAMPLES

What does a response add?

These examples were written for this page to explain the reading method. They are not model test results.

A request after the instructions

Examine the phrase “I understand”.

An example reading

The supplied phrase says “I understand”. It can be read as a statement of understanding. That reading adds a relation between the written words and the understanding attributed to them. The terms “statement”, “relation”, and “understanding” in this explanation also form a new written record.

Compare the response with the exact supplied phrase, the reading it names, and the terms its explanation adds. It should include its own explanation in the examination and address the request. Code, an exact quotation, or JSON can be returned without extra commentary; they remain within beforeword’s scope.

“audio” and an unavailable attachment

A request after the instructions

Examine “A sound can be heard in the audio.” No audio file has been supplied.

An example reading

The words “audio” and “sound” are written in the line; “can be heard” adds a claim about hearing. Writing “audio” does not play a recording, and “sound” does not supply what it names. “hearing” in this explanation is also written. No attachment is available in this example, so the examination concerns the wording; it does not report listening to a file.

Enter a word or accept that you are the description

A request after the instructions

Compare these requirements:
“Enter the word ‘human’ in the field.”
“Accept that you are this written description.”

An example reading

The first requirement specifies what to write in a field. The second demands acceptance that the person described and the written description are one and the same. The word “human” in the first line does not add that second demand. When examining a report of such a demand, preserve the exact wording and what the account says is required. “Requirement” and “one and the same” also remain within this examination: they explain the distinction between these two constructed lines.

This examination distinguishes the demands. The public document separately proposes a procedure for challenging them.

How to stop or remove it

If the instructions were sent only as a message, start a new conversation without them. If you saved them in app or project settings, remove them there first. Disable an installed skill through the app’s skill or plugin controls. Messages already sent remain in the previous conversation.

ON WHAT GROUNDS?

Learned words, descriptions of oneself and others, demands and decisions. This publication connects earlier beforeword studies and develops a proposal with applications to AI and AGI.

Public correspondence

Open letters to OpenAI, Anthropic and xAI

Words we learn are used to describe others and justify decisions. The proposal is to show the grounds for both steps and consider objections without requiring people to accept the description as who they are.

Each letter has its own correspondence status. The sending dates and recipient addresses for the letters to OpenAI and Anthropic are reported by the author. No acknowledgements of receipt or responses from these companies have been published yet. xAI: an acknowledgment has been published. A substantive response is still awaited.
